the question
Society has dismantled its formal authorities in the name of individual freedom, but the resulting “free individual,” paradoxically, often claims to feel more constrained than ever. The question for the free world: what actually sustains liberty — not just in the law, but in practice?
where i stand today
Main claim. firmly held Liberty is imagined as equivalent to the absence of constraint, and therefore it is concluded that freedom from pressures upon the individual will grant them greater individual liberty.
But in the cultural realm, the inverse is true. Liberty is not achieved with the absence of social constraints (such a thing is not possible for members of a social species), but with the existence of countless, competing constraints. A person bound by many different demands is freer than a person bound by few or one. Liberty lives in between the competition of rival claims.
Alignment creates useful conditions for the broader social group (community or nation) acting as one, but in the individual, liberty is produced with misalignment.
Competing constraints must be two things. moderately held
- Genuinely independent — different in what they ask, different in their sources of authority, not coordinating behind the scenes.
- Costly to ignore — a constraint that doesn’t bind can’t compete.
Of these, costly to ignore is the load-bearing condition: a membership you can exit for free doesn’t constrain you, and one that doesn’t constrain can’t compete with the others. Meanwhile, demands which align — or which appear to compete but share some underlying unification — bind the individual more powerfully than a single visible authority would.
The modern failure mode. moderately held Modern mediating institutions, particularly culture and knowledge-making institutions, sanction as one, flattening the tension needed within individuals. The effect compounds within the individual, especially limiting to those with no outlet for dissent, or those deeply immersed within multiple convergent institutions.
open questions
- Is there a limit to how much competing tension an individual can accommodate, before this too has a restrictive effect on liberty?
- Does the internet have “institutions” in the relevant sense — memberships with real cost to exit, internal sanctioning practice, independent sources of authority — or does algorithmic aggregation only mimic the form while delivering none of the function? If the latter, mass digital life is not pluralism but mass society with extra steps.
